"After 26 months of development the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 9 (code name Stretch), which will be supported for the next 5 years thanks to the combined work of the Debian Security team and of the Debian Long Term Support team. Debian 9 comes with over 51,000 binary packages, a new record for a stable Debian release. The usual long-development cycle and conservative, well-tested nature of the product is a consequence of the distributions support for a number of processor architectures (i386, amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, mips, mipsel, mips64el, ppc64el, s390x) and a wide range of deployment scenarios, including desktops (GNOME 3.22 as default, with KDE Plasma 5.8, LXDE, LXQt 0.11, MATE 1.16 and Xfce 4.12 also provided) and servers. The Debian project, which develops the worlds largest Linux distribution, has announced the release of Debian 9, code name "Stretch". At the top of the tower is Debian - carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together. Next is all the software that you run on the computer.

Debian comes with over 20,000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) - all of it free. Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Linux is a completely free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.

Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. This operating system is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system.
